Soto, Indonesian’s distinct kind of soup, successfully captures food connoisseurs by its hearty and earthy ingredients involved. There are abundant kinds of soto menus you can find across Indonesia starting from soto ayam, soto kudus, soto padang, etc. For this time, I gorge myself having a visit to one of food stalls offering the best soto betawi in Karawaci, Tangerang.

Betawi is believed as the natives living in Jakarta, or called as “people of Batavia”. As the time goes by, there are more and more immigrants make a settlement in this region, creating an immediate impact towards its cuisine influenced by Chinese, Indian, and Arab. Because of this historical fact, no wonder if soto betawi uses minyak samin (ghee oil) as the basic ingredient.

While getting inside, you will see quite spacious kitchen station, wagons, and assorted kinds of snacks such as traditional cakes and cassava chips to be carried home. Though Ci Melie’s main specialty is soto dishes, I see many kinds of foods offered inside this culinary spot like gado-gado (Indonesian-style salad), fried & grilled chicken, various soups, pempek (Indonesian fish cake), etc. In short, this food stall is quite heterogeneous and archipelagic.

You can choose your dining whether outdoor or indoor. I choose to have my meal indoor as the sun shines brightly but bloody hot! Within the AC on and non-smoking area, you can enjoy the ambiance a little bit. If wanting to observe how hectic and lively the restaurant is, the outdoor area suits perfectly for you.

After a few minutes waiting and watching the people come and go, eventually my soto betawi is served on the table. At this stall, you can custom your own soto betawi either with chicken, beef, or both. I choose both because it seems so sumptuous yet tempting. And they taste great and blended perfectly in the dish though it uses coconut milk as the main ingredient. Besides, they are boneless and skinless. One more thing to remember: soto betawi will not be completed without melinjo chips, shredded tomatoes, and fried shallots.

Its gado-gado signature is incredibly delicious! I cannot explain why, but I can sense its spicy-peanut sauce is very distinct and unique, perhaps it is a kind of secret ingredient or secret cooking technique implemented. You must try this if having a visit to Ci Melie’s stall.
